APRIL FISH ?

Cleveland, Texas and Gender Jim Crow

By William Jelani CobbIn the three weeks since the New York Times broke the story of a child’s rape there, the events in Cleveland, Texas, have morphed into a category-five media storm. The Times piece, which echoed and amplified currents of victim-blaming in the town, generated a tide of criticism. Yet beneath the outrage was a parable of modern media. Aside from the familiar and incendiary

Upcoming Collections Part 2!

Deborah Lippmann Spring 2011
These are the 2 new shades from Deborah Lippman

Left to Right:
Glitter in the Air- blue base with pink and blue glitter
Naked- beige, fleshy tone

I thought this was pretty interesting when I first saw it, I'm intrigued by Naked, I'm not usually a fan of beige polishes because they are really sheer and this one is no exception, but I like this one. Glitter in the Air is just very unexpected for me, it's cute and little girly but nice. It is a very sparse glitter. Here are some really great swatches

China Glaze Island Escape Summer 2011

Left to Right:
Papaya Punch-orange creme
108 Degrees-berry pink with micro glitter
Senorita Bonita-purple shimmer with pink micro glitter
Blue Iguana-sparkly blue
Cha Cha Cha-green shimmer
Electric Pineapple-lime green creme

Very island-y! I think the collection fits perfectly with the name. My favorite color by far is Papaya Punch, it's not too orange yet not too light. I love it. Here are links to 2 different swatches

When to get rid of makeup?- Shelf life of makeup

We sometimes forget that makeup does expire and does contain bacteria after some time.

Foundation

If your foundation has a pump then it will last longer, for about a year. However if you are using a foundation in which you have to put your fingers in then it will last you 6-8 months. The reason it last less is because you keep opening it and it then picks up bacteria.  Also if the foundation is water based it will last less than if it is oil based. Oil foundations tend to separate if they are around heat , so keep them in a cool place. I know some people who store them in the refrigerator, but don't know if you really have to go that far.

Powder Foundation

Can last over a year, if there is no shiny build up on the surface.

Mascara and Liquid Eye Liner

You should get rid of your mascara every 3-4 months because it contains moisture which then turns into bacteria. This can give you eye infections, or irritate your eyes. You can also know by smelling your mascara, if it smells funny, throw it out.

Makeup Pencils

Last up to 3 years, once you sharpen the pencil you get rid of any bacteria or germs.

Lipstick

You can keep them for 1-2 years or until you notice a weird smell. They last longer if kept in a cool place.

Eyeshadow

Will last up to 3 years.

Brushes

You should wash your brushes at least every month. You can use shampoo or baby shampoo to wash them.

Sponges

Wash these weekly and throw them out monthly. You need to be really careful with these because they can carry a lot of bacteria that can cause breakouts or irritation to the skin.

MAC Mischievous Mint and Black Shatter

So, I've had on Mischievous Mint for a full week and the wear is absolutely fantastic (the same goes for Mean and Green). Seriously, not one chip after a full 7 days! I thought it would be a waste to remove a manicure that hadn't chipped at all, so I just added a bit to it. I've been wanted to try shatter tips, and I used this as my opportunity

Indeed, I like it. I just put Black Shatter on the tips freehand and no top coat.

The whole MAC Quite Cute Collection kind of reminds me Easter because of the pastel colors, and when I did this it kind of reminded me of an easter egg. Like when you dye an easter egg it can sometimes get cracks of color, yeah like that. So, I think its pretty appropriate for the upcoming holiday.

I, once again, want to mention the 'follow' button that you may see to your right. It would be handy and snazzy and such things if you would press that button and follow us. We appreciate the support. Also, we are in the works of creating a logo and we'd love your input!

Eye Makeup Ideas to Try

Copper Eye Makeup

Copper eye makeup can look very elegant, simple, yet can really bring out your eyes. For this look you will try a shimmery copper eyeshadow, use lightly and then build the color. You can also put some of the copper eyeshadow to line the bottom line of your eyes, make sure to blend. Also try lining your water line with white eyeliner.

Cat Eye Makeup

So if you are looking to stand out from the crowd try the cat eye look. To create this look you will want to try it with a think brush and it does take some practice to achieve. You should start out thin then build your line to as thick as you want. Since this liner is pretty dramatic you will want to keep the eye shadow neutral and simple.

Navy Eye Makeup

This is a great color to try for a softer smokey eye. It also brings out your eyes if you have hazel or brown eyes. Try pairing it with grey eyeshadows as a base then add the navy blue to the contour of your eye.

Until next time,

MAC 's new collection ins called Quite Cute
This collection features make up and nail polish as most MAC collections do. This is a softer side of MAC, all the colors are more or less pastels.

These are the polishes left to right:
Little Girl Type- lavendar
Ice Cream Cake- pink
Mischievous Mint- green, blue mint

All the polishes are creme pastel, I swatched and reviewed Mischievous Mint in my last post

OPI has a slew of new collections coming out this year, they are launching a new set of crackle polishes, four new shades for the Serena Williams Glam Slam! Collection, the Nice Stems! Collection, Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides Collection and the Touring America Collection.

1. Crackle
Left to right:
Black Shatter
White Shatter
Red Shatter
Blue Shatter
Turquoise Shatter
Navy Shatter

The three blue shades are going to be available alone while the white and red will be in sets.

2. Serena Williams Glam Slam!

Left to right:
Spark de Triomphe (silver glitter)  and White Shatter
Rally Pretty Pink and Red Shatter

3. Nice Stems!
Left to right:
Play the Peonies- soft pink
Come to Poppy- shimmery coral pink

Mermaids Tears- sea foam-ish green
On Stranger Tides- sage, grey green

Sparrow Me the Drama- pink
Planks A Lot- purple

The collection also includes the silver shatter. I was redally excited to hear about this collection since I'm a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan, but I was pretty underwhelmed with the colors. Pirates and pastels just don't do it for me, but we'll have to see when the collection actually comes out. I am a fan of Skull and Glossbones, Mermaids Tears, Stranger Tides and of course the Silver Shatter.

And just for the fun of it, here's the display!

5. Touring America
First row left to right:
Uh Oh Roll Down the Window- olive green
Honk If You Love OPI- dark grape
A-Taupe the Space Needle- rich taupe
French Quarter for Your Thoughts- grey
Get in the Espresso Lane- dark brown
Road House Blues- dark blue

Second Row left to right:
Suzi Takes the Wheel- grey
I Brake for Manicures- eggplant plum
Are We There Yet?- melon shade
Color To Dine For- rosy red
I Eat Mainly Lobster- coral
My Address is Hollywood- rose pink

I'm kind of iffy about this collection, a lot of the colors seem familiar and overused. It'll be interesting to see in in person when it comes out this fall/winter.

Also I just want to remind all our viewers that we really appreciate feedback, emails and comments and most of all followers. If you like our blog/ view our blog often or even if you don't, there's a handy "follow" button on the right hand side near the top. We'd really appreciate if you'd click that button and follow us :) Thanks!

MAC Iridescent Loose Powder in Silver Dusk

MAC Silver Dusk, is one of my of my favorite products. It is a loose powder with a mix of Mica and pigments. I use this everyday to highlight my cheeks and it gives a really nice glow to the skin. I also use it in the inner corner of my eye to help brighten my eyes.
The price is $23.00 but it is worth it, even if you use it everyday it last foreverrrrr, since so little of it is needed. You'll need a bit on your brush, tap off the excess and apply it on your cheek bones. When the light hits your cheeks it will give you a very nice and natural glow especially in photos. Sometimes I also you it as an eyeshadow base, I just the color of it. It is like a champagne color. I recommend getting this shade if you have light skin or a pink/cool undertone. If you have a tanned or darker skin tone you should try the other shade named Golden Bronze. It is the same exact product just that this is one is a bronzed color. This is a great product for those with dull skin because it brings out a glow. I was introduced to this product by my makeup teacher and since then been hooked on it.
The only con I have is that it can be messy, so be careful not to drop it because it is a loose powder. I am very clumsy and always drop it, then I have shimmer covering everything not a pleasant experience to clean up.

I was trying to get a photo of it but it is very hard to photograph, however the swatch on MAC's website is a very good swatch. This is exactly the color . But it will not look like this on your face unless you wear a ton of it and trust me that's not what you want. You will have a champagne colored patch of shimmer on your face, not cool. Therefore, remember less is more!!!

Upcoming MAC Collection: Mischievous Mint!

Thanks to a very good friend of mine aka my best friend, I was able to get my hands on one of the polishes from MAC's upcoming spring collection, that should be available April/May.

This is Mischievous Mint! I've been meaning to get a nice mint color, and then this metaphorically fell into my lap. It's a really nice, perfect mint creme. The color really hits the nail on the head, it reminds me of mint ice cream (now I want mint ice cream!). Here, I have on 2 coats and a top coat. The formula looks like it would be fine, but the actual application wasn't as great as I'd thought it would be. For some reason the polish came out strangely streaky and bubbly/lumpy. It did smooth out a bit when it was drying, but I added the top coat to ensure a smooth finish. This might have been because my bottle is a sample, hopefully when the actual collection comes out the formula is fixed.

Besides that formula mishap, I adore this color. I've wanted a nice minty color for a long time and I love this one. The color is perfect, not too green, not too blue, and it looks great in the creme finish. I can't wait until this collection comes out!

Until next time,
The Wicked

How to apply concealer

Concealer helps cover any imperfections you may have on your face. By using a concealer as well as foundation you will be able to achieve a flawless look. It can be used to cover broken capillaries, dark circles, pimples/blemishes, and to even out skin tone.
For the best coverage use a stick or cream concealer, since they are thick in texture it will last longer and provide more coverage. Liquid concealers can be oily and may glide off.

Dark circles have a blue undertone, therefore you can use a concealer with a yellow undertone to counteract the blueness. For pimples and blemishes also use a concealer with a yellow undertone, if you use a pinkish undertone it may bring accentuate the redness.

You may use a primer to help prevent the concealer from caking up under the eyes. Always use a matte concealer not anything with shimmer this will just highlight the problem.

Applying Concealer

Apply your concealer before your foundation. To cover the under eye, pat concealer under the eyes using the index finger. Then gently blend outwards. To hide bags, put concealer under the bag, not on the bag, if you do, you will end up highlighting the bag rather than hiding it. To hide broken capillaries or uneven skin tone, you can apply the concealer with a concealer brush or your finger. Then blend outwards.

Until next time,

Double Manglaze: Free Hand French

Originally I was going to test out the Black Shatter over Manglaze, but I couldn't decide which one to use. After I finally decided on Fuggen Ugly, I suddenly didn't want to use the shatter. So, the dilemma continued, especially when I saw that most of tips of my nails got smudged. And so the idea for french tips was born!

Its a coat of Fuggen Ugly, and the tips are Matte is Murder. I really love how it turned out. Yes, my tips are somewhat uneven, I'm still working on it, but other than that it's awesome if I do say so myself. I've been thinking of getting tip plates, but now I don't think I need them. Woo! I'll probably try out some more tip combinations, maybe a shatter tip or matte nail with glossy tip!

Makeup Tips For Your Face Shape

Oval Face

This is the ideal face shape because you can really try anything. The best way to take advantage of your oval shape is to bring out your best feature. Whether it is your eyes, lips, eyebrows ect. You really have nothing to worry about but you can try some of the tips below.

Round Face

A round face has a shorter distance from the forehead to the chin, and wider from cheek to cheek. A round face has full cheeks and rounded chin. What you need to do is add a lengthening effect to your face by contouring the jaw line, temples and cheek for a more oval look. Remember that to contour you will use a color slightly darker than your foundation. This should never be more than two shades darker then your foundation.

Square Face

Has the same width from the edges of the forehead, across the cheek and from jaw to jaw. Also a strong and broad forehead with angular jaw. You should use a darker shade to accentuate the central part of your forehead. Also contour the hairline on the temples and jaw at both corners in order to soften the corners. The color of your blush should be matte to reduce the appearance of the cheeks.

Long Face

A long face has high cheek bones, raised forehead and distinct jaw line. The face is longer that is is wide. It is best to highlight the temples, cheeks, and bottom jaw. This will give the face more width.

Triangular Shape

Has a narrow forehead and cheekbones and a wide jawline. You need to soften the lower part of your face. You should avoid emphasizing the cheeks or chin. Contour your temples

Sally Hansen Gel Cuticle Remover

Since I started doing my own manicures, I've been looking for a good way/ product to do my cuticles. When I was looking for any time of cuticle product I came across this stuff.

It did come in a box, and I apologize about the backwards writing lol I used my computer to take the pictures instead of my camera.

The directions on the back say to apply a thin strip around cuticles and leave on for 1-2 minutes, then loosen and push back cuticles and then wash excess away with warm soapy water. It also says not to leave on for over 10 minutes and not to use more than twice a week. I'm not sure what will happen if you do, they decided not to specify.

I've found that it works better when you leave it on for 2-3 minutes, then I use a wooden cuticle thing to push them back. It works pretty well if you make sure to leave it on long enough. You have to be careful when putting the gel on, because A LOT comes out if you're not gentle. It does a pretty good job and its not expensive so I'm a fan. When I run out, I'll try out some different ones and let you guys know which is better.

Until next time,

Graffiti Created by Juan Benet: Epic Graffiti Workplace

DescriptionGraffiti Sketches....my workplace....messing around.

Top Make-up Mistakes!

Dark lip liner and light lipstick
This look was from the 80s and that's were it should stay. Instead use a liner that is close to your natural lip color when using light colors. If you are using a dark liner fill in your mouth completely, then you can top it with clear lip gloss.

Lip liner extending beyond the lip line
When you color outside the lip line it will look sloppy. Make sure to follow your lip line to have a clean and flawless lip.

Applying lipstick to chapped lips
Never apply lipstick on chapped lips. Instead use lip balm to moisturize your lips
applying any lipstick.

 Clumpy Mascara
The best way to avoid clumping is by wiggling the wand from side to side, from the base of your lashes to the tips.  Also, don't wait for the mascara to dry to apply a second or third coat, do it while it is still wet.

Obvious line of blush
The best way to avoid this is to get a big blush brush, stay away from the compact brushes that come with the blush. They will not help.  When applying the blush tap the excess amount off the brush. Then apply the blush in upward strokes on the apples of your cheeks, making sure to blend up to the hairline and ear.

Caked- on foundation
If you apply heavy cover-up will only draw attention to the problem you're trying to hide. When you need more coverage apply it only on the problem areas and blend it really well.

Strong, hard eye liner
A strong, hard line all around the eye is not flattering and will only make your eyes look smaller and closer together. Instead blend the bottom liner with eyeshadow the same color as the eyeshadow.

 Wrong foundation
Wearing a foundation that is too light will make your skin look ashy especially if you have dark skin. Also, for lighter skin tones wearing a darker foundation will make you look orange or yellow.  Make sure that when you are looking for a foundation to get one that matches your undertone.

Until next time,
The Wicked
